Why We Don’t Celebrate Valentine’s Day (And That’s Okay)

Valentine’s Day is a big deal for a lot of people. It’s the day to celebrate love, romance, and grand gestures. But for my husband and me? It’s just another day.

That’s right—we don’t do Valentine’s Day.

I’m not sure exactly when I decided I wasn’t a fan of the holiday, but it was long before I met my husband. I never made a big deal out of it growing up, and I don’t recall my parents doing so either. Apparently, my husband felt the same way—or maybe he was just relieved he didn’t have to remember another special date!

So why don’t we celebrate? Here are a few reasons:

  1. Love Shouldn’t Be an Obligation

Why do we need a specific day to remind us to show love? My husband and I express our love daily—some days more than others (let’s be real! 😂). I’d rather have consistent love all year than one day of forced romance. If I had to pick a single day for an extravagant show of love, I’d choose our anniversary because it actually means something to us.

I find it way more romantic when he surprises me with flowers in August, just because, rather than buying an overpriced bouquet on February 14th—along with every other husband in America.

Valentine's Day Love
  1. We Don’t Need a Calendar Reminder

We say “I love you” to each other multiple times a day—not because we have to, but because we genuinely mean it. Our love isn’t dictated by a date on the calendar.

  1. It’s Just Another Day for Us

We don’t exchange gifts, we don’t say “Happy Valentine’s Day,” and my husband gets more than a few jealous reactions from friends and coworkers who do have to make a big effort.

Instead of celebrating Valentine’s Day, we:

  • Plan trips together (with and without the kids) throughout the year.
  • Make time for date nights.
  • Surprise each other randomly—when it actually means something, not because it’s expected.

You Do You

Now, I’m not saying celebrating Valentine’s Day is a bad thing—because it’s not! If you love it, go for it. But if you don’t, you’re not alone. You don’t have to follow the crowd. There are plenty of other days that are special to us, and we’d rather focus on those.

Do you celebrate Valentine’s Day? Why or why not? If you do, what’s your favorite part about it? Let’s chat in the comments!

Let’s walk in grace and wisdom together.

With love and encouragement,

Tiffany

**P.S.

I just want to say Happy Valentine’s Day!  I hope you enjoy the day no matter how you do or do not celebrate it!
